Find Our Core Unique Strength

TreeSummertime in Minnesota has been flying by faster than an asteroid entering the earth's gravity. Like much of the country, we've experienced some weather extremes. Since I'm powerless to directly influence the weather - along with what's happening in Washington, D.C. and the price of gas, among other things - I accept that I'll have to deal with whatever comes my way and hope that I do so with resourcefulness and grace. Yet there are some things in my life that I can control, and the most important of these is my attitude and outlook. I can choose to find and create joy in my life.

In this edition of Conversations from... we will look at three important areas to strengthen in order to FOCUS: Attitude, Spirit, and Natural Gifts.
Strength & Your Attitude
Can I really control my attitude? When someone cuts me off on the highway, I sometimes react in a less than joyful way. Occasionally, I get downright angry. But I know better. I know that anger will decrease my joy-level. I can make a conscious choice to not react to external stimuli, but rather to act based on my own desire to experience more joy. I can stop, take a deep breath, observe myself in the moment, and ask - what is the best action or way of being I can choose at this moment? This thought changes a negative, automatic reaction into a positive, chosen action. As a result, my attitude improves as does my capacity to connect with people. I don't get "hooked" as often by the others. Ultimately, I experience greater joy. By exercising conscious choice, my core unique strength improves.

Building a Positive Attitude:
  • To face life's challenges - exercise your inner emotional muscles. You'll find that challenges become easier to handle, and your ability to handle future challenges increases.
  • Become aware of what you can impact and what you can't. For example, I can't control someone else's anger or poor attitude, but I can control whether or not I get "hooked" by another's behavior. As I make better choices, I strengthen my inner resiliency.
Strength & Your Spirit
meditation
Where does our core unique strength come from? How do we connect with it? For those readers who, like me, have a spiritual mind set, we believe in a power greater than ourselves. Some call the power God, others call the power Buddha, or Nature.

When we connect with that spiritual Self or spiritual power, we find renewed strength. At times in my life, I've questioned the path I'm on, and wondered why are these events happening to me? Why is this happening in the world? When I turn to prayer and meditation I don't get answers - but I do get a different mind set, which helps me to FOCUS on what's most important.
Strength & Your Natural Gifts
Over the years, I've become more aware and appreciative of my natural ability to both connect with and feel a deep compassion for others. As with all gifts, we must learn to use them wisely. I must balance how much of my time and Self I give away to others. Awareness of what a gift a compassionate nature truly is did not come easily. When a behavior or way of being comes naturally, I often do not appreciate the quality as a special gift or ability. Only when I hear others talk about some of the things that are easy for me and difficult for them, do I become aware of and fully appreciate these qualities in myself.

What are your personal strengths and natural gifts?

To discover your own strengths, there are many assessment tools that will help. A personal branding assessment from 360°Reach is a tool I use with some clients (before selecting a product from the 360°Reach website, contact Denny for free guidance). Other ways to identify your personal strengths and natural gifts include:
  • Asking others about how they perceive you. Need some ideas? For a free downloadable list of questions to get you started, CLICK HERE.
  • Become more aware of what comes easily and naturally. A recommendation I make to some of my clients is to keep a journal or log. Write down a few things each week (or more frequently) that energize and come naturally to you.
