Life

Create A
Refreshing Environment
It's
that time of year when many people look forward to
throwing open their windows and inviting spring
inside. Gardens are being planted, lawns have
turned from the pale of winter to an energizing
green and, in general, people seem brighter and
more joyful.
 This is also a traditional
time for deep spring cleaning. While we tend to
think of spring cleaning in terms of our offices
and homes - our external physical environment -
this year I'd like you to think about your
internal, personal environment. There is
more than one way to do a spring cleaning, and
this is what we'll explore in this month's
newsletter. |

External
Environment - Your
lifestyle
Just
like having too much stuff in a room makes it
crowded and hard to move around in, having an
excess of activities can make life less
pleasurable and more difficult. Work, school,
kids' activities, volunteering, friends, hobbies,
exercise, church and so many more demands are
placed on our time. In a very real sense this
excess can limit one's personal freedom.
It's
all too easy in today's fast-paced world to become
a human doing rather than a human
being. When I'm rushing from one spot to
another, or one e-mail to another, I begin to feel
closed-in and claustrophobic. Too much of
anything can actually restrict life
rather than expand it.
Tips:
- Make a list of activities you currently do
or are involved with, then prioritize the list
based on what is important to you (not
necessarily to others).
- Identify which activities excite and/or
energize you.
- Identify those activities that drain or drag
you down.
- Become more strategic about what you say
"yes" to. Consider the ramifications of
participation before committing.
I recently heard the phrase that
"those who are successful say no, while
those who are very successful say no .... A
lot."
I couldn't agree
more. |

Internal
Environment - Your thoughts &
emotions
Is
mental clutter getting in your way? Are there
habits that have built up over time that no longer
serve you? Most people are very aware of
their external environment, but what about one's
internal environment? While our external
environments tend to take up most of our time and
attention, our internal environments - our hopes,
dreams, fears, feelings - sorely need and deserve
our attention. Yet the internal is easy to ignore
when so many externals clamor for our attention.
Nonetheless, you can make this year different by
expanding your attention to include what's going
on inside you.
Think
about the stories and dreams you've kept hidden,
then ask yourself why these parts of you are kept
in the shadows. Just as you open your home's
windows to let the fresh air in, opening your
heart and mind allows both mental and emotional
clutter to escape while simultaneously allowing
others into your life.
Tips:
- Devote 10 minutes a day during the next few
weeks to work on your internal spring cleaning
list. Is something troubling you? Are you
feeling overwhelmed? Are you following your
dreams? This exercise will help you clarify the
hidden parts.
- Ask yourself how your thinking and behavior
serves you. Does something need to
change?
My desire for
you is that you'll start living more from the
inside out by identifying your true thoughts,
feelings and desires. This personal authentication
process does require some soul searching, but
results in greater happiness and a more fully
realized life...
