AIM ~ Action Increases Momentum *
When you take action on your dreams, you'll find that they will take on a life of their own.
Bench for resting...A young Indian brave took an egg from an eagle's nest and put it in a chicken yard. The egg hatched and the eagle grew up among the chickens, pecking in the ground for food as they did, scratching in the dust as he watched the others do. One day, he looked up and saw an eagle soaring above him. He felt his wings trembling and he said to one of the chickens, "I wish I could do that."
"Don't be a fool," the chicken said. "Only an eagle can fly so high."

Feeling ashamed of his longing, the eagle went back to scratching in the dirt, never again to question what he believed to be his assigned place on earth.  ~Native American fable
The best thinking alone by the world's brightest minds never achieved a thing until followed by action. A.I.M....Action increases momentum. Unless accompanied by action, plans, dreams and desires wither and eventually die.

Most dreams are merely that, dreams, until effort is applied to them. In fact, many people have dreams that die on their wish list because no action is taken.
  • What type of action do you want to take today?
  • Is what you're doing helping you to accomplish your dreams?
  • Do you work on activities that don't get you closer to your goals?
  • If so, what are those activities?

Activities & Exercises in AIM:

  • Write down three things you can do this week to get started on your dreams.
  • Do those three things!

Create Connections, Get Support, Nurture Relationships

canoeLife in the 21st Century moves at a remarkable pace, but were our bodies and minds designed to optimally function on high speed? Busy schedules may be unavoidable, perhaps more so during this season (with holidays fast approaching) than at any other time of the year, but practicing good self-care should not be considered an optional luxury. If we are well in body and mind, we are better equipped to attend to our responsibilities and get more enjoyment out of life.

Create Connections
  • Most importantly, connect with your Self. Think back to what made you happy as a child; are there things you can try to incorporate in your day? Playing with your pet, reading the Sunday comics, sketching a picture. Laugh - and if you don't feel like laughing, force a small smile. Research has shown that the action of making a smile releases feel-good chemicals -- even if the smile is one made with effort!
  • Take a nature break. Go for a walk at a nature center or around a lake. If you don't have time, then step outside your office or home for just a moment and listen for a chirping bird or look for a billowy cloud.
  • Connect with others: Make a list of a few friends or people you'd like to be in regular contact with, then make a plan to connect with at least one of these people in the coming week.

Get & Give Your Self Support

  • Who is the person you can tell anything to? We all need at least one person we can rely on for support. That may be a friend, partner, spouse, therapist or clergy person. Life can be hard, but our burdens are halved when shared with another.
  • There are simple ways to support your own wellness on a daily basis: Make exercise a priority. You don't have to belong to a gym or own any fancy equipment; a 20 minute walk at lunchtime can clear your head and soothe your soul (as well as contribute to heart health!).
  • Be conscious of your breath for one minute. As you breath in, imagine happiness and peace. As you exhale, release any tension you may have.
  • Build a few 10-minute breaks into your day. You will find that you are more productive with the rest of your time if you press "pause".

Nurture Your Relationship with Your Self

  • Keep a gratitude journal. At the start or end of each day, take a few minutes to write down at least one thing you are thankful for.
  • Over the next week, become aware of what lifts your spirits as you move through the day. Write those in your gratitude journal.
  • Learn to say NO to those things that don't energize you.
  • Say YES to those bigger things that do energize you.
  • Hang onto your dreams! Write down your dreams and what you'd like your life to be like.
  • Ask yourself: What would you like to create over the next week?
  • Look at the biggest dream and determine one thing you can do over the next week to move in that direction. Take Action.
